Who we are

St Catherine’s Hospice is a much loved independent local charity providing high quality specialised care for people living with medical conditions that can be treated but cannot be cured.

We are here for when it matters most.

We work with patients, carers and families, following medical referral, to help people live as independently and fully as possible.  Care is provided at home, through outpatient appointments, day therapy and overnight in the Hospice

All care is provided free of charge.

St Catherine's is governed by a Board of Trustees that oversees the work of the Hospice by providing strategic direction and monitoring performance.  The Board makes sure that the palliative care needs of local people are being met as effectively as possible and that there are sufficient funds available to do so.

The Board appoints a Chief Executive who is responsible for the day to day operation of St Catherine's Hospice Care.  St Catherine's currently employs just over 170 paid employees, approximately 75% are clinical staff including those who work as a 'bank' to provide cover for leave.

As an independent local charity every member of staff is 'operational' in one way or another and there is no head office or overarching levels of bureaucracy.

There are over 500 wonderful volunteers who generously give their time, skills and abilities to help St Catherine's to provide the highest standards and range of services that local people need.

Approximately 72% of Hospice funding comes through charitable support with the remainder being provided through agreements with the NHS.

In 2010/11:

  • It cost £4.9m to run St Catherine's Hospice Care
  • Every donation counts whether big or small to enable that large sum to be raised
  • 1 in 5 patient's care was funded from gifts in wills
  • A £100 donation could provide an in-patient with meals for a week
  • A £1,000 donation could buy specialist medical equipment like a syringe driver
  • A £20,000 donation could pay for a nursing assistant for a year
  • Because of our wonderful volunteers and ability to attract additional funds we multiplied every £1 donation by 9 so that everyone's donation is put to the best possible use!
  • We are working very hard to adapt our income generation and fundraising in these difficult economic times, as you can imagine, this is a really big challenge!

Our aim is make excellent palliative care available to all in Chorley, Longridge, Preston and South Ribble.

Thank you for your special interest in St Catherine's Hospice Care.
