Who we care for
St Catherine's Hospice is here 'for when it matters most' providing essential specialised healthcare for people living with serious medical conditions that can be treated even though they cannot be cured. Care is provided free of charge.
As a centre of excellence we help people to live as independently and fully as possible using personalised care plans that are based on dignity, privacy and self-respect. Most patients are cared for in their own home.
St Catherine's treats adults and most of our patients are in the catchment area of Chorley, Longridge, Preston and South Ribble. We also provide Lymphoedema services for adults and children.
Whilst some of our patients are in advanced stages of cancer we also help people with medical conditions such as heart failure, motor neurone disease, Parkinson's disease and others.
Our services are designed to be as flexible as possible so that we can offer each person the right combination of treatment, therapies and support to suit them.
Our Clinical Nurse Specialists who work in the community are available seven days a week so that patients can be cared for at home where it is possible to do so. (To avoid confusion it's important to say that our highly qualified Clinical Nurses are not funded by Macmillan but are funded by St Catherine's Hospice.) We also provide outpatient and day therapy facilities. Where 24hr care is needed, patients may be admitted onto our in-patient unit so that persistent and more complex symptoms can be alleviated.
It's important to us that family members are supported as well, so we have a Family Support team who are qualified social workers and provide patients and families with advice for non-medical social issues and concerns. This can include help with paperwork, understanding if social / government funding is available, counselling and bereavement support. St Catherine's also provides chaplaincy services, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and complementary therapy.
St Catherine's is an independent charity based at Lostock Hall near Preston. Our attractive facilities are lovingly maintained and our well tended gardens are carefully nurtured to create a beautiful healthcare setting. Most people who visit for the first time are surprised by its bright, welcoming and uplifting atmosphere and we make every effort to ensure a positive and encouraging environment. Quality, cleanliness, privacy and dignity are amongst our highest priorities.
