105 members of staff from the 35 care homes registered with the programme have attended the ‘Introduction to the Six Steps’ half-day workshop.

The session covered the following topics:

  • Why End of Life Care is so important
  • The importance of talking about death and planning for the end of life
  • What a ‘Good Death’ may be from the point of view of the resident/family/care home worker             
  • The definition of End of Life Care
  • National, regional and local drivers of End of Life Care
  • The North West End of Life Care Model
  • The roles and responsibilities of care home representatives on the course
  • Change management
  • The audit cycle
  • Overview of the Six Steps to Success programme

Actions the staff took away were:

  • Develop an End of Life Care Philosophy to be applied to the home
  • Quality markers audit (to monitor how End of Life Care in the care home fits with the national Quality Markers and Measures)
  • Post-Death Information Audit (to review and document the provision of End of Life care in the home)
  • Feedback to members of the wider team
  • Commence development of an End of Life Care Policy
  • Collate evidence for Six Steps portfolio
