Chaplaincy

Not all our patients want spiritual support but for those that do we operate a chaplaincy service which we know is important to both them and their families.  Chaplains are available for those with either secular or spiritual beliefs.

St Catherine’s employs a chaplain who understands the work of the Hospice and coordinates a team of voluntary chaplains. They are here to offer spiritual care and support to those of all faiths whether it be spiritual or secular.  The aim is to be available to support people in the most appropriate way and to respect and protect each individual's privacy.  Chaplaincy is available but it is not intrusive.

Our on-site chapel is available to all, including families and carers, as a place for prayer or simply as a quiet space for contemplation, regardless of secular or spiritual belief.

Christian services are held in the chapel on a weekly basis, including Catholic mass on a Thursday.  We’re also happy to welcome ministers, priests or religious leaders known to our patients into the Hospice to provide spiritual support to them while they are in our care.

Religious practice and spirituality have been at the centre of life’s key issues since time began, as human beings have wrestled with big questions and created rituals that help them to celebrate life’s joys, grieve over life’s pain and mark out stages in the journey of life.

St Catherine's is concerned for and respects each and every person as a whole person, and part of that concern is demonstrated in the presence of a chaplaincy team.

Spiritual care can take the form of established religious practice, shared moments of conversation or silence, simple prayers or assistance in helping people to follow their own religious and spiritual practices.

The Chaplaincy team offers help and support to patients and their families as a companion to those who may be struggling on their life's journey as well as encouraging those who feel assured by their faith.
