Lymphoedema Treatment Options
Depending on the location and severity of the patient’s Lymphoedema we have a range of therapies available and our Lymphoedema service team will design a programme of treatments best suited to the individual.
Skin Care
Patients with Lymphoedema are very vulnerable to infection and any dry or cracked skin can increase the risk of infection as it provides a route into the bloodstream. The application of moisturising creams to the affected area(s) is essential.
Compression
The use of compression bandages helps to move fluid from under the skin back to the lymphatic system where it can re-enter the bloodstream.
Massage
Specialist massage techniques can help to drain lymph fluid from the affected areas, enabling it to drain back into the bloodstream. Our Lymphoedema team carries out this massage for patients and teaches patients self-massage techniques to enable them to treat themselves.
Exercise
Exercise can help to control and reduce the swelling for Lymphoedema patients and our team is on hand to recommend a programme of exercise that fits the needs and capabilities of each individual patient. This may include walking, swimming or gardening.
