John Bretherton began volunteering at the Leyland charity and furniture shop as a way to keep busy when he took early retirement from the Post Office.
He said: “After working full time all my life and always being busy and active, when I finished it was a case of finding something else to fill the time. I saw they were advertising for volunteers at the Leyland shop and five and a half years on, I’m still here.
“My postie rounds were around here so I’m often seeing people I know from those days – it’s a great way to keep in touch with the community. I like the company and meeting people and we have a good laugh in the shop. There’s people like me – who like it because it’s a way of getting out and about, and it can also be very useful for younger people too, looking for some work experience as they start out.
“We’re always in need of helping hands – just a few hours a week can really make a difference to St Catherine’s and the people it supports.”
