Meet One of Our Volunteers!

irene-wilsonSylvia Roberts from Penwortham has been volunteering at our ladies’ boutique since the start – and says it’s been fantastic at helping her feel part of the community.

She says: “I’d lived in Northern Ireland for many years and moved back to Lancashire into Penwortham when my father became ill. At first it felt quite lonely, as my best friends didn’t live in the village and I didn’t know anyone. I wanted to get out and about and meet some people in Penwortham and when I saw that St Catherine’s was opening the boutique I thought it would be a great way to do it.

“It was the best thing I could have done! I have made many new friends through the shop – other volunteers, and also the regular customers who come in each week. The place has become a real community hub in the area and there’s a lovely atmosphere. I really enjoy coming in to ‘work’ – we have such a laugh! And it’s great knowing that what we’re doing is helping to raise money for such a good cause.

“The Penwortham boutique is the perfect place for me – I love sorting through the donations and seeing what lovely things have been given to us. We are really lucky with some of the labels we get, and it’s fantastic seeing how happy the customers are when they get such a good deal! They often come back the following week wearing what they bought on their last visit to show it off which is so nice to see.

“I’m so pleased I signed up to become a volunteer with St Catherine’s as I get such a lot out of it – I’m sure there are lots of other people who would enjoy it too.”
