Meet One of Our Volunteers!

marie-hargreavesMarie Hargreaves was inspired to volunteer at St Catherine’s after her mother-in-law was cared for on the hospice in-patient unit.

She said: “Everyone at St Catherine’s looked after my mother-in-law so well – and they looked after us too, as a family. It was a lovely place for her to spend her last days. The care we all received really stuck with me, and made me want to do something to give back.

“I’d worked for 19 years in a school office and then we ran our own laundry and dry cleaning business. When I finished work I decided volunteering would be a good use of my time – though to be honest, I’m busier now than when I was at work with the various things going on!

“I enjoy working in the hospice gift shop, especially at times like Christmas when there’s all the lovely things out on sale. It is quieter during the evening, but there’s often something else I can help with from the admin or trading office. I chat to the other volunteers on reception and I’ve become good friends with two ladies who I now go out for coffee with.

“You feel very appreciated as a volunteer at St Catherine’s – the staff are always very grateful for the work you can do and the help you can give. If you’ve got a few hours spare, it really is a worthwhile way to spend them.”
