When You Don’t Know What To Say (communication tips for all)

Our specialist Knowledge Exchange Team delivers high quality education through interactive training sessions. Our study sessions and courses are continually reviewed and updated, with new subjects added regularly to provide the most up-to-date guidance and expert advice, and to facilitate topical and diverse discussions amongst health care professionals and members of the community.

It’s good to talk – but what happens when the topic is too tricky or the subject too sensitive?

It’s often easier to shut down and avoid opening up about what is really bothering us for fear of what the consequences of laying ourselves bare might be. This study session aims to enable those difficult conversations to take place.

By offering some prompts and guidance, we hope it will help people to support relatives, friends and neighbours who may be going through a dark or difficult time and ensure people no longer look back with regret and think ‘I just didn’t know what to say’.

We will cover:

  • Why conversations might be difficult
  • Recognising the emotions involved
  • Basic conversation skills
  • Listening skills
  • Techniques for talking

This session will be delivered online by St Catherine’s Hospice. You would need to have access to a computer or mobile device with internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. Please note attendees must log into the event via the invite received from St Catherine’s Hospice 15 minutes before the start.
