Sportsman’s Dinner – an evening with Mark Lawrenson

DSC_2430Sports fans and St Catherine’s Hospice supporters came together for a special evening with the charity’s patron and celebrity football pundit, Mark Lawrenson.

The hospice’s Sportsman’s Dinner was held at Preston North End’s Invincibles Lounge on Thursday night.

Hosted by ‘Lawro’, the event also featured entertainment by comedian Tony Jo and DJ Des Grant.

St Catherine’s chief executive Stephen Greenhalgh welcomed guests to the occasion, and a raffle followed the delicious dinner served up by The Villa at North End.

Stephen said: “What a fabulous evening we had! Special thanks go to our charity patron Mark Lawrenson for offering his time to host this special event, and to staff from Barclays bank in Fishergate, Preston, for volunteering their valuable time to lend a hand on the night.

DSC_2407“We’d also like to thank our supporters who attended and donated towards the raffle and auction – it all makes such a difference in our continued efforts to help local families when it matters most.”

Guest speaker Mark Lawreson recalled entertaining anecdotes from his sports career, which started at Preston in 1974. He went on to play for the Republic of Ireland and as a defender for Liverpool during the 1970s and 1980s, and is now a regular on TV and radio including Football Focus.

DSC_2448He spoke fondly of his times with Preston legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Tom Finney, and relived the traumatic experience of the Heysel Stadium disaster of May 1985.

Fantastic raffle prizes included a signed Sir Tom Finney canvas; signed Everton and Blackburn Rovers football shirts; a Glen Eagles round of golf; and a voucher for Afternoon Tea for two at The Mill in the grounds of St Catherine’s Park in  Lostock Hall.

A live auction raised further funds for the cause,  with top prizes including an executive box for the PNE and Rotherham FC match in April, kindly donated by Dewhurst Homes; an iconic 1980s Liverpool FC retro shirt personalised by Lawro himself; and a Manchester United shirt signed by midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
