40 years of supporting your
community
How it all began
Kitty Sharples, Mayor of Preston with a passion for care, was the driving force behind
St Catherine’s Hospice. In 1981, recognising the urgent need for hospice care in the local
area, she formally established the charity and founded the first Fundraising Committee
which raised over £700,000 to enable care to begin in the former Lostock Hall
Convalescent Hospital. Without Kitty’s compassion and the community’s support,
St Catherine’s would not exist. As the Duchess of Norfolk Anne said: “Ms. Sharples saw
a need for a hospice in the Preston area and made the dream a reality.”
