Promoting Choice In End Of Life Care For Young Adults
St Catherine’s Hospice and Derian House Children’s Hospice are joining forces for the first time to host a conference that will look at the challenges involved in advanced care planning for young adults.
It’s currently an area of much debate as an increasing number of young people with life limiting illnesses are surviving into adulthood which means there’s a growing need for specialised care for the 16 to 25 year old age group. This conference will pull together experts from both children’s and adult services to share knowledge, look at best practice and learn about innovative ways to improve care for young adults with a progressive life threatening illness.
Speakers include:
- Eleanor Sherwen - National Programme Manager, The NHS National End of Life Care Programme
- Vikky Riley - Teenage Cancer Nurse Consultant North University College Hospital London
- Lorrraine Cundy - Clinical Manager, Brian House Children’s Hospice Blackpool
- Erin Bolton - End Of Life Care Lead for East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals
- Julie Foster – End Of Life Care Lead for Lancashire and Cumbria.
The conference, Promoting Choice In End Of Life Care For Young Adults, will take place on Monday 14th May 2012 at the Education Centre, Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, Preston Road, Chorley, PR7 1PP. Tickets cost £80 before 29th February and £90 thereafter with lunch and refreshments included in the price.

The conference will feature presentations and discussions about a wide range of issues facing professionals, such as best interest decisions, difficult conversations and treatment and resuscitation plans.
Eleanor Sherwen, National Programme Manager - The NHS National End of Life Care Programme, will kick off the day with a look at the national perspective. She says,
“A conference like this is vital to highlight the importance of advance care planning and to have the opportunity to share best practice and air challenges- advance care planning is important for all age groups to ensure that true person centred care is delivered and that choice is supported and promoted throughout the care pathway.”
This conference is aimed at all health and social care professionals who are involved in the treatment and care of young adults with life limiting illnesses.
