60 miles for 60 years to support St Catherine’s
By Jade Taylorson
Two friends celebrated their 60th birthday with a sponsored 60 mile walk to raise funds for St Catherine’s Hospice.
Christine Clithroe and Ann Greenland, who met as volunteers in Kenya, shared their milestone birthdays by doing a sponsored walk of 60 miles along the Leeds to Liverpool canal, raising a whopping £500.
Both Christine and Ann have family and friends, past and present, who have strong connections and loving memories associated with St Catherine’s Hospice.
Their adventure began at Skipton and finished at Wigan Pier. Along the way they ventured through woods, fields and housing estates to reach their final destination, stopping at Barnoldswick, Whitebirk and Withnell Fold.
Ann said: “Throughout this journey the weather was fantastic and the scenery was just fabulous. Although, we were beginning to get a little sore footed.
“The scenery changed around us as we walked into the industrial parts of Lancashire which proved different but just as interesting.”
After an enjoyable stay in Barnoldswick, The Fountain Hotel, where Christine and Ann stayed, kindly donated £10 to the hospice and transported them back to the canal the following day.
The journey from Whitebirk was greatly helped along by a friend, Judith Smith of Stanworth Farm, who walked with the women to Withnell Fold and encouraged them along at a faster pace.
On April 26 Christine and Ann completed the final part of their journey with a beautiful walk along Wigan Pier.
Emma Jacovelli, fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “What a fantastic feat Christine and Ann have achieved with this walk!
“We are extremely grateful to them for choosing to support St Catherine’s – the money raised will help us to be there for people when it really matters most.”
