BLOG: Caring for Carers – Help Carers Feel Supported
Helping carers feel supported
Caring for someone you love can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be extremely demanding. Cheryl Scott, Support Team Manager at St Catherine’s, explains:
“Carers give so much of themselves. It’s important they feel supported too.”
Cheryl has supported people navigating the emotional and practical pressures of caring. She recognises how vital it is for carers to feel valued and supported. Here, she shares her advice on looking after yourself while caring for others.
Prioritise rest
Make space for rest, connection, and things that nurture you. Even small pauses can help you maintain your strength and resilience.
Take time out
Stepping away briefly can make a big difference. A walk, a chat, or joining a support session can give you breathing room and help you feel less alone in your role.
Share the load
You don’t have to manage everything alone. Professionals can support with everyday tasks — like shopping, sitting with the person you care for, or helping with practical jobs. Even small amounts of support can ease pressure and help prevent overwhelm.
Support for carers
Carers’ drop‑in sessions
Held on the first Tuesday of every month, from 1.30pm–3pm, our drop‑in sessions are open to all carers. They offer a warm, informal space to chat, share experiences, and connect with others.

Know your rights
Under the Care Act, carers are entitled to a carer’s assessment to explore what support might ease the pressures you face. Help is available — and you deserve it.
Befriending Service
Our volunteer‑led Befriending Service provides friendly companionship for people with life‑shortening illnesses and their carers. Volunteers offer conversation, emotional support, and a reliable presence, helping reduce isolation and giving carers valuable time to themselves.
