Catherine’s delight at Christmas Raffle win

Catherine Rose received the best possible Christmas present by scooping the £4,000 first prize in the St Catherine’s festive raffle.

The windfall came as a surprise after she initially overlooked a voicemail message from the hospice to break the happy news.

“I got the voicemail message from the lottery team and ignored it for a few days. I was joking with my mum that maybe I’d won the raffle, but it was more likely I’d given them the wrong bank details!

“I’d just set up a direct debit to do the lottery as there’s no door-to-door collections due to the pandemic. I never thought I’d win and it was a lovely surprise.”

Catherine, from Walton-le-Dale , is currently furloughed from her part-time job at Cuerden View Cafe and cares for her mum Jean (pictured).

She added: “I’ve been doing the hospice lottery for years and they send tickets for the Christmas Raffle through the post, so I bought two books for £10.

“You don’t enter to expect to win, just to support the hospice really. I’ve won the odd fiver in the lottery and the whisky in the first raffle St Catherine’s ever did.

“I’ve no idea what I’ll do with my winnings, but I’ll probably send some back to the hospice because they do amazing work. They looked after my mother-in-law Joyce Shaw with such care and dignity when she died in 1999 and I can never thank them enough for it.

“We’ve also got two grown up sons Simon and David, so no doubt they’ll get a share of it as well.”

  • The St Catherine’s lottery carries a weekly jackpot of £2,000, plus other cash prizes. The care of one in 10 of our patients is funded by lottery income. To join for just £1 a week, please call 01772 629171 or click here.
