Couples take on canoe challenge in aid of St Catherine’s
Two couples teamed up to complete a 25-mile canoe challenge in aid of St Catherine’s.
Heather Catt and John Ralphs, along with Amy and Tom Halsted, carry out a fundraising challenge every year for the hospice or for various charities.
This one covered 25 miles passing through Preston to Lancaster.
Heather, a PhD student at the University of Liverpool, said: “The day of the challenge was miserable; it rained pretty much non-stop for nine hours. By the end of the 25 miles three of us were very sore and happy never to undertake the challenge again!
“Despite the horrific conditions, we made the best of it by frequently lashing our canoes together and working as a team.
“We chose to support St Catherine’s because it was close to the heart of our friend Damien who died earlier this year.”
St Catherine’s fundraiser, Hayley Jackson, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Heather and the rest of the team for taking on this unique challenge and raising £410 for the hospice.
“Without the continued support from people like Heather, John, Amy and Tom in the community, we would not be able to continue providing our specialist care to people in Central Lancashire, who are facing conditions such as motor neurone disease, cancer, heart failure and MS.
“It costs £5.2m every single year to provide our vital services and support to patients and their families; £3.5m of which we need to generate through charitable efforts and fundraising. We’d like to thank the foursome for their amazing efforts!”
