St Catherine's Hospice > Dugie and Cathie thrilled with results of garden make over

Dugie and Cathie thrilled with results of garden make over

A couple who won a garden make-over worth £500 at the St Catherine’s annual plant sale said they are thrilled with their new-look lawn.

Dugie and Cathie Smith scooped the prize – generously donated by Duxbury’s Garden Services – at the April fundraiser, which was also sponsored by the Leyland-based firm.

They decided to use the money to have two large tree stumps removed from the front garden. They also had new turf laid on the lawn and some borders planted after putting some extra cash towards the prize.

Dugie said they were chuffed to have won the make-over, and delighted with their new-look garden..

“We’d had a large Elm and Birch cut down and the intention had always been to get rid of the stumps too. It meant everything came together when we won the prize – it’s certainly saved me a lot of work in the garden!” he said.

“I think this is the first time we’ve ever really won anything so it was a bit of surprise too. We’re very pleased with the results – even though we’ve not had chance to enjoy the garden much because of all this rain. We’re already looking forward to the spring and making good use of it then.”

Dugie and Cathie, who live in Leyland, added their thanks to Duxbury’s and St Catherine’s – a charity they are only too happy to support.

“We always try and help St Catherine’s where we can,” Dugie added.

“We play their lottery each week and like to go along to the different events they organise. It does wonderful work for local people.”

Frank Duxbury said the firm was ‘very proud’ to have been the sponsor for this year’s plant sale at St Catherine’s.

“Duxburys is well known for giving to good causes, and we decided this year we should give the generous supporters of St Catherines a chance to win a garden make over,” he said.

“In these difficult times, charities need more help and I think successful businesses should play their part more than ever”
