Family cycle Guild Wheel in memory of beloved husband and dad
Mother-of-four Karen Boyes arranged a family bike ride around the Preston Guild Wheel in memory of her husband Steve Boyes.
Steve, who was an accountant, was diagnosed with lymphoma of the brain in 2013. Following a series of treatments, and a year of uncertainty, he was admitted to St Catherine’s Hospice in April 2014.
To mark Steve’s anniversary on May 1st, Karen, her children and close family and friends, completed a sponsored bike ride around the Guild Wheel.
Karen said: “Steve had a heart of gold, thinking of others before himself. My daughters thought the family bike ride would be a great way to remember their dad and at the same time raise funds for the hospice.”
The 21-mile cycle ride around the Guild Wheel, passed the River Ribble, ancient woodland, historic city centre parks and a nature reserve.
Karen said: “I severely ripped my calf muscle the week before the bike ride and was walking on crutches. Martin at Wallis Cycles in Higher Walton was kind enough to loan me the use of an electric bike, which meant I could take part – I couldn’t thank him enough.
“The weather on the day was miserable with lots of rain. However, we had lots of fun and laughter, and managed to raise £1667.11 for the hospice.”
St Catherine’s fundraiser Rochelle Crichton said: “We’re extremely grateful to Karen and her family for their donation.
“The hospice relies on our generous supporters and their fundraising efforts, which enables us to continue providing care for people with life-shorting illnesses when it matters most.”
