Lights lit at St Catherine’s Hospice in memory of loved ones

Hundreds of people gathered at St Catherine’s Hospice for the switch-on of the annual Light Up A Life display, organised to remember those who will be missed from our celebrations this Christmas.

The event – which this year marked its 17th anniversary – is always a special evening, looked forward to by many people who find comfort in celebrating the lives of dearly departed loved ones by dedicating a light in the commemoration.
The names of those honoured in the light display – which also includes a beautiful sparkling Pergola – also feature in a Light Up A Life remembrance book kept in the hospice chapel throughout the year.

Charnock Richard Brass Band volunteered their time to play at the event, adding to the evocative atmosphere of the night, while hospice staff and volunteers served mulled wine, mince pies and parched peas.
Although the lights have now been switched on and will burn brightly throughout the festivities – including at the charity’s Christmas Festival this Friday and Saturday in the hospice grounds – dedications are still welcome throughout December.
They are welcome in memory of all, not just those who have had experience of St Catherine’s – with all money raised going towards supporting the hospice’s specialised care.
Cliff Hughes, chairman of the board of trustees at St Catherine’s Hospice who has attended the event since the beginning, said: “Light Up A Life is a very important and special event for many people, which has gitemn and gitemn over the years.
“For me, it is heartening to see so many people come together to remember their loved ones at this time of year.
“It is a very moving and popular event, and the beautiful display gives people a tangible reminder of their loved ones at Christmas.”

Christine Mason, from Ingol, was there with husband David and granddaughter Lauren, remembering David’s father Joseph who was cared for by St Catherine’s Hospice.
Christine, aged 59, who has emphysema and suffered a stroke, now also attends Day Therapy at the hospice each week.
She said: “Light Up A Life is a very special occasion when people come together to remember those who were important to them – it felt lovely to be part of it all.
“It’s also a great way to support St Catherine’s and the brilliant work they do – coming to the hospice really is the highlight of my week.”
