Meet with Lancashire authors for book shop’s 20th anniversary

St Catherine’s Hospice is hosting a special authors’ event at its popular Preston book shop, to celebrate the store’s 20th anniversary.

The charity’s book shop in Wellington Road, Ashton, will welcome Lancashire fiction writer Suzanne Snow and Preston historians David Hunt and Edmund Crighton on November 26.

Shop supervisor Tracey Newsham said: “Our book shop is really well-loved and is a wonderful treasure trove for book-lovers. We’re excited to do something extra special for our customers and the local community to celebrate its 20th anniversary, which will feature readings and conversations with three local authors, as well as refreshments and a raffle to raise funds for St Catherine’s.”

The book shop opened its doors in 2003, but the building’s history dates back more than 130 years. It was a greengrocer’s in 1891, and became a butcher’s in the 1920s.

“Anyone interested in the history of the site is welcome to come along to speak to myself and our volunteers,” Tracey added. “And we’ll have two local historians to speak about our city’s interesting past. David has written A History of Preston, A History of Preston North End Football Club: The Power, the Politics and the People, and Preston: Centuries of Change. Edmund Crighton is author of Types and Shadows: A History of Preston City Parish, which features his own photographs and stories from his ancestors.

“We’re also really looking forward to hearing from fiction writer Suzanne, who writes contemporary and uplifting fiction inspired by her love of landscape, romance and rural life. Her titles include The Cottage of New Beginnings, The Garden of Little Rose, A Summer of Second Chances, and A Country Village Christmas.

“It promises to be a really insightful and enjoyable afternoon, which everyone in the community is invited to attend.”

  • The event takes place from 1pm until 4pm on Sunday, November 26 at St Catherine’s Hospice Book Shop, 73 Wellington Road, Ashton, Preston, PR2 1BX.
