Nurses hike Scawfell Pike

A group of determined nurses scaled Scawfell Pike and have raised an amazing £1,920 for St Catherine’s Hospice.

Alison Parkinson, who works at Ashtree House Surgery in Kirkham, wanted to take on the trek to support the charity which cared for her beloved mum Barbara Sorton.

Alison, from Clayton-le-Woods, said: “In October a group of nurses from Ashtree House Surgery walked up Scawfell Pike in memory of my mum, who was a patient at the hospice for three weeks in May this year.

“We chose to raise money for the hospice because of the care she received and the support myself and my family received both whilst she was a patient but also by the St Catherine’s community team.

“My daughter and her friend also took part in the walk – as well as my dog Chester – and one of the nurse’s husband’s was our mountain guide.

“We thoroughly enjoyed the day; we met some lovely people along the way and managed to collect a further £120 in the charity buckets from the very generous walkers we met on the mountain, to add to the £1,800 we had raised in sponsorship on our JustGiving page.

“We plan to do this as an annual event, climbing different mountains each year, and will hopefully tackle Snowden in 2020.”

Hayley Jackson, community engagement officer at St Catherine’s, said: “I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Alison, her colleagues, friends and family for their incredible support of the hospice. It is only thanks to the amazing efforts of supporters like Alison and the group, in raising much-needed funds for our charity, that we are able to continue providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care to local people.”
