Stepping back in time to school at day therapy reminiscence session
Day therapy patients at St Catherine’s Hospice took a trip down memory lane as part of a reminiscence session hosted by volunteers from the Harris Museum.
The theme of this month’s session was ‘school days’ and talking points included old school photographs from the turn of the century – borrowed from the museum for patients to look at – and the nursery rhymes and poems pupils used to recite by rote.
Lawrence Turner and Peggy Selby, volunteers with the Outreach programme run by the museum, also brought along a jar of aniseed balls and a box of shells which would have been used for counting back in the day.
The group reminisced about their respective schools and shared tales about their teachers.
Lawrence, who along with his fellow volunteers visit various other care homes in the area to deliver their sessions, said: “It’s all about encouraging people to look back, to share their stories.
“It can be something different to talk about and can bring back many happy memories and happy times. It’s a privilege to hear their tales and it’s amazing at how much people can remember – we are always learning new things!
“Once again we’d like to say a big thank you to Sainsbury’s and Booths who donated some of the goodies for us to use, and of course a big thank you to all the patients for sharing their stories.”
