Steve and Diana’s delight at St Catherine’s lottery win!

A St Catherine’s lottery member who scooped the £1,950 rollover prize surprised his wife to a memorable gondola ride during a trip to Venice.

Steve Crew joined the hospice’s lottery a couple of years ago but said he never expected to win.

And after receiving the phone call with the good news, he decided to put his winnings towards extra treats for the couple during their holiday in June, including a cabaret dinner on their final night.

Steve and his wife Diana have been supporters of St Catherine’s for many years; Diana has taken part in our Moonlight and Memories Walk and has experienced the care of St Catherine’s when her brother was cared for on our inpatient unit.

Playing the weekly lottery means that the pair are helping the hospice on a regular basis; it’s one of our most reliable sources of income which enables us to budget and plan for the future.

Steve, from Cottam, said: “I nearly didn’t answer the phone because I didn’t recognise the number, so when they told me I’d won some money I was delighted! And when they told me how much I just couldn’t believe it! I was flabbergasted!

“I’ve never won anything like this before.”

The retired engineer, who now works part time in health and safety and human resources, added: “We’ve given some of the winnings to our two daughters and four grandchildren, and we put some towards our spending money for Venice.

“We’re also decorating the bedroom so it will help towards that, and we usually take the family on holiday to Wales in the summer, so we’re thinking of going away for a little bit longer this time which will be great.”

Diana said: “We’re happy to support St Catherine’s; it’s a God-send really in this area, and you can just feel the warmth when you arrive at the hospice. It’s a very happy place which is really needed.”

Playing the St Catherine’s lottery costs just £1 a week and there’s a weekly jackpot of £2,000 plus other cash prizes, including the rollover which can reach more than £5,000.
