‘The hospice lottery is a great way to give little and often’

A Penwortham granddad says supporting the St Catherine’s Hospice lottery is a great way to donate ‘little and often’ to his local charity.

Iain Jenkins was amazed to win the weekly £2,000 jackpot recently, and is looking forward to treating his family and spending time with his grandchildren when lockdown lifts.

“I’ve been a member of the hospice lottery for years; it’s a regular donation that you don’t have to particularly think about,” he said. “It’s about giving little and often. I like to support a few different charities because there are so many worthy causes, and the lottery is a good way of doing that.

“St Catherine’s is so highly regarded in the area. My father spent his final days there, and I remember it was such a peaceful place. It’s reassuring to know that the hospice is there for you and your family if you ever need it, so I’m glad to do my bit and support the charity with a regular donation.

“My late wife used to enjoy fundraising for St Catherine’s too, such as taking part in the Moonlight and Memories Walk.”

Iain, who has three grandsons including two who live in Canada, added: “I was really amazed when I go the call to say I’d won the top prize! I’ve never won anything like that in my life. I have two grown-up children who are raising young families so I’m giving some to them, and I’m donating some back to the hospice as well.

“I have family in Canada and I haven’t met my youngest grandchild yet so I’m really hoping we can arrange a visit later this year.”

– It costs just £1 a week to join the St Catherine’s Hospice lottery, with funds helping us to provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care to local people. The lottery has been one of the most reliable sources of income during the pandemic, when many of our other fundraising activities have been affected.

There’s a £2,000 jackpot winner every Friday, as well as other cash prizes including a rollover which can reach more than £5,000. To become a valued lottery member today, please click here.
