Three men on a bike to support St Catherine’s Hospice!
Three radio DJs are gearing up for a wheelie great challenge when they take to a triplet bike to raise cash for St Catherine’s Hospice!
The Bee Radio breakfast show host Rob Charles, Olly Houldsworth, who presents the day time show, and Paul Winstanley, who hosts the home run show, are taking part in the charity’s Big Charity Bike Ride on May 17th on a 12ft, three-seater cycle.
The ‘Three Men on a Bike’ fundraiser will see them pedal 30 miles to represent the 30 years St Catherine’s has been open.
The regular routes in the Big Charity Bike Ride are a 20-mile circuit of the Preston Guild Wheel – which is unsuitable for the triplet bike because of the various gates and crossings – a 50-mile ride through the countryside or a 75-mile challenge ride introduced especially for the hospice’s 30th anniversary.
All start and finish from Preston Grasshoppers in Fulwood and places are still available for those interested in joining in and showing their support.
Rob, who is also the voice of the radio DJ on Peter Kay’s Car Share, said: “As St Catherine’s celebrates its special birthday we wanted to do something to show our support and contribute towards this fantastic charity.
“We are somewhat cycling novices so weren’t sure we’re up to the 50-mile ride! It means we’ve adapted the route to make it 30 miles for 30 years. We’ll be setting off with other riders and meeting up with them again at the Scorton Village Hall rest point which will be great. We hope along the way people will stop and say hello and give a donation to the hospice – we’ll have a trusty bucket tied to the back. We’re sure the sight of three men on one bike will be a bit of a talking point – so make sure you look out for us on May 17th!”
Speaking after a practice ride along the prom at Lytham St Anne’s Olly – who will ride in position number three at the back of the bike – said they were feeling a little more confident about what was ahead.
“When I first saw the size of the thing I have to say I was terrified!” he said. “But we’ve had a go and we’re feeling a bit more confident now.
“We’ve always wanted to do something together – a bit like the Three Men in a Boat TV show!”
Paul, who will ride in the centre seat, said he was looking forward to the day and to doing their bit for an important local charity.
“One of our colleagues at the station recently did a skydive for St Catherine’s and we’re really keen to continue that support for such a great cause.
“We’ve always spoken about doing something like this together and I’m sure we’re going to have a good laugh in the process.”
