Story

Mildred was born on 25 May 1924, the eldest of 5 children, to Alice and Tom Bromley. She is survived by two of her sisters, Margaret and Joan. She lived in William Street in Chorley and attended St. Mary’s RC School Chorley. In her youth she used to sing in the choir and even managed a solo role. She also swam with a synchronised swimming team.
Mildred left school at 14 as she needed to start earning a wage. She started work as a seamstress sewing dressing gowns until war broke out and she got her call up papers. She was placed in the ATS as, following testing, it was determined she had a technical flair. She was taught to drive and proceeded to drive lorries, ambulances and staff cars throughout the war.
Mildred married Tom Wilcock, a farmer, in 1949 and they had 11 much loved children: 5 boys and 6 girls. She lived in their marital home until she died very peacefully on 29 Oct 2023.
She was kind, caring and very hard working, making her children’s clothes, cooking and keeping their home spotless. She also found time to help with their education, reading bedtime stories and checking writing and spellings.
She was a much loved mother and an exceptional person and will be greatly missed by all.

When mum was in her late nineties I asked her what words of wisdom she would like to pass on . She laughed at the idea and then within a couple of minutes said ‘ BE KIND ‘
An amazing , caring person and how lucky we were to have her as our mum .
