Family look forward to holiday after hospice lottery windfall
A family who won the St Catherine’s Hospice lottery is looking forward to spending the prize on a holiday and surfing lessons this summer.
NHS worker Helen Hughes was the lucky winner of the £2,000 jackpot recently, and said the windfall has come at a great time following a tough year.
“It’s been an awful year for everyone and it’s nice to have something to look forward to,” she said. “We were so excited when we were told we’d won the St Catherine’s prize. We’re hoping to go to Cornwall and my son would like surfing lessons so we’ll put it towards that.”
The 47-year-old, who lives in Bamber Bridge with her husband and teenage children, added: “My grandma, granddad and dad were all cared for by St Catherine’s so I’ve seen the good work they do. They’ve got such a way of providing end of life care.
“I know the charity doesn’t receive a lot of funding from the government and has to raise a lot from supporters, so playing the lottery is our way of giving back. It just feels like a natural thing to do.
“You don’t even notice the £1 coming out every week, and I certainly never expected to win – it was an amazing surprise!”
– It costs just £1 a week to join the St Catherine’s Hospice lottery, with funds helping us to provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care to local people. The lottery has been one of the most reliable sources of income during the pandemic, when many of our other fundraising activities have been affected.
There’s a £2,000 jackpot winner every Friday, as well as other cash prizes including a rollover which can reach more than £5,000.
