St Catherine’s pulls out all the stops for Lorraine’s wedding day

A couple who had been together for 35 years finally tied the knot in a special ceremony at the hospice – where staff pulled out all the stops to ensure the bride and groom enjoyed an unforgettable day.

Lorraine and nurses

Lorraine Chambers and Chris Davey said their vows in front of close family and friends in the hospice’s Garden Room, before their marriage was blessed in our Chapel.

Fresh flowers were organised by our volunteer florist and a delicious wedding breakfast was prepared by the kitchen team. The nursing team ensured she was looking her best – helping with hair, make-up and a manicure.

Lorraine’s beautiful wedding gown was sourced from the St Catherine’s bridal boutique in Preston, and friends Tina and Dennis Crotty made a wonderful wedding cake. The whole event was co-ordinated by the hospice’s Support Team who ensured everything went smoothly on the day.

Lorraine, who is living with various conditions including cancer, said the effort the team had gone to was ‘unbelievable’ adding: “Everyone has been wonderful, I’ve been pampered and made to feel like a superstar.

“The whole time I’ve been at St Catherine’s the treatment has been five star, but on the wedding day they took it to another level.”

Chris, aged 65 – a retired mechanical fitter – said it was amazing what had been achieved in the space of just a few days.

“The day was perfect – everything went well and all the different elements came together to make it really special. It was a real team effort. Lorraine looked incredible – I was really happy and excited to be saying ‘I do’ after so long together.”

The couple, from Farington, said St Catherine’s had made such a difference to their lives – both when Lorraine stayed on the in-patient unit at the end of last year, and over the past two weeks when she was readmitted after suffering a fall.

Lorraine, aged 59, said: “They’ve helped manage my pain and other symptoms, and they’ve also been there for me emotionally too, helping me to cope. I don’t think I’d be here today getting married without them.”

Chris added: “The help from St Catherine’s has been tremendous. Last year we were able to get Lorraine home for Christmas which was so important to her, and now they’ve helped us celebrate our wedding day. They are amazing.”
