VOLUNTEER WEEK: ‘Some volunteers have been with St Catherine’s for 25 years or more, and that speaks volumes.’
‘Some volunteers have been with St Catherine’s for 25 years or more, and that speaks volumes.’
Sue Downie gets a lot of enjoyment working in administration, helping to run the reception gift shop, and covering various fundraising events for St Catherine’s Hospice, and says she feels valued for her contributions.
She also feels satisfaction knowing she’s helping a worthy local cause, and likes keeping busy through her variety of different roles.
Sue, 61, says: “I came here with an open mind and was prepared to get stuck in, and the satisfaction I get volunteering here is immeasurable.
“I always knew I wanted to volunteer when I retired, and when one of my best friends was cared for here a few years ago, I decided this was going to be my vocation.
“I didn’t put myself forward for anything in particular, I just wanted to help. They needed someone in admin and then in the reception gift shop once a week, so now I do things like filing, working in the post room, sorting out cheques, tidying the stock room, serving customers in the shop, and pricing items. I’m not one to sit still!”
She adds: “I also help out at events and I really love that. The atmosphere is amazing. I’ve volunteered at the Moonlight and Memories Walk and Yellow Day, and my favourite is the Christmas Festival when I’m Santa’s little helper in the grotto.
“The people here are incredible and the staff work so hard. You read letters from people who have experienced the care and support of St Catherine’s, and it makes you feel really proud to be doing your bit.”
