This focused training session is designed to support registered healthcare professionals to develop knowledge, skills and confidence in the use of CSCIs/ambulatory syringe drivers in palliative and end of life care.
The session explores when and why a CSCI may be clinically appropriate, the core medications commonly used, and the practical considerations required to ensure safe, effective symptom management. Participants will gain a clear understanding of monitoring both the patient and the device, recognising alerts and alarms, and applying best practice.
Practical demonstration and hands-on experience are included, allowing participants to observe correct set-up, programming and troubleshooting in a supported learning environment.
Learning will cover:
- Identifying clinical indications for commencing a CSCI
- Core symptom management and commonly used medications in end-of-life care
- Communication considerations when initiating a syringe driver
- Siting and monitoring of subcutaneous cannulae
- Safe set-up, operation and monitoring of
- Recognising and responding to alerts, alarms and common issues
- Documentation and patient safety considerations
- Who should attend: Registered healthcare professions who are new to CSCIs, or who would benefit from a structured refresher to support safe practice in palliative and end of life care.
Delivery format: Interactive teaching using presentations, group discussion and practical demonstration. Please note this session provides the theoretical component; supervised practice, local policy and competency assessment are required in the clinical setting.
This course will contribute 3 hours of CPD towards professional revalidation.
