Meet one of our volunteers
Kathryn Howorth, from Kirkham, had already been volunteering for St Catherine’s Hospice for 18 months when she signed up to join the new team at the Longton boutique when it opened in 2016.
She says: “My husband and I had shops of our own for 40 years, these ranged from hardware shops to newsagents. We sold our last shop in 2015 and thought, what do we do now? That’s when we started volunteering for the hospice; I began at the Penwortham boutique as a shop assistant and Phil is a volunteer PAT tester.
“Volunteering in the shops is the best thing I could have done – I love retail. The role isn’t just about selling; the social element is great. You work with a range of people and you get to know some of the regular customers.
“You can do as little or as much as you want. There is a variety of different roles to choose from across the charity; in the hospice, shops or in the grounds of St Catherine’s Park. Volunteering in the shops is wonderful, it fills the gap since selling our shop – I would recommend it to anyone.”
Donate to our shops
Most of our shops rely on donations from members of the public for their stock and we always need clean, saleable items in good condition that people will want to buy.
