Ken Youde joined the team at Ashton Book Shop after a serious health scare – nearly 10 years on, he still loves giving his time at the store.
He said: “I suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2004 which changed my life completely. After 30 years as a teacher with hardly a day off in my life, it was obviously a massive shock.
“It had been touch and go at one point during my illness and afterwards I viewed things with a different perspective as you might imagine. I’d always been so busy with teaching but then I realised there was more to life than work – but on the flip side, I knew I couldn’t sit at home every day, as I’d get bored stiff! I took early retirement from teaching, and, once I was recovered, enquired about volunteering at the book shop.
“I live nearby and had always said to myself that when I retired I would join up as a volunteer there. It’s such a homely, friendly store, I’m very happy to be involved. I was a geography teacher and head of year at the nearby school, so I still get plenty of past pupils coming in and saying ‘hello Sir’ which is funny! We help people with their requests and get to know our regulars’ tastes and favourite authors so we can look out for things for them.
“I’ve made lots of new friends through the shop and it’s a great team to be part of – I’d certainly recommend it to others.”
